Eternal vigilance only way to beat terrorists

Fresh reports of likely terror attacks in Kenya and neighbouring countries have sent chills down everyone’s spine, forcing security agencies to mount serious surveillance to forestall such eventualities.

Potential targets such as shopping malls, embassies, commercial entities, airports and other public institutions have been put on alert and security agents deployed to keep vigil.
Kenya has suffered massively under terror attacks perpetrated by Al-Shabaab militants, who regard the country as enemy for leading the onslaught against them in Somalia and also associating with nations they regard as enemies.

The latest such attack was the vicious raid of the Westgate mall in Nairobi that left more than 60 people dead and hundreds maimed.
For all practical purposes and intents, the militants want to destabilise the region and undermine all efforts towards economic growth.

While taking cognisance of what the government is doing to prevent the attacks, it must be noted that the terror groups are well-organised and funded.
They know when to strike to exact the maximum pain and they never give a damn about their nefarious acts.

Being the schemers they are, they are likely to do things that mask their real intentions. So when the police and other agencies are busy laying out strategies and enforcing strict security measures, the terrorists will go into hiding and wait until our agencies relax, and then emerge and strike.
This is why we call for an effective and well-thought-out security strategy in which our security agents continuously monitor the situation and respond decisively to provocation. Not only must the security patrols be intensified, they must be made a permanent feature.
