A stable marriage and family is the foundation of a prosperous nation, President Yoweri Museveni has said.

The President noted that everyone is nurtured in a family and “if you meet a child or citizen with poor morals, in most cases it reflects on the way that citizen was nurtured by the family.”

He appealed to Ugandans to respect the institution of marriage and family, saying it would lay a firm foundation for society.

Museveni made the remarks during the celebrations to mark 25 years in marriage for the Lwengo Woman MP Gertrude Nakabira Lubega and her husband Emmanuel Lubega at Kinooni town council.

According to a statement, Museveni noted that it gives him joy, happiness and hope that Ugandans have recognised the importance of the family as the fibre of society on which citizens are natured and institutions are grown. He congratulated the couple on their achievement and asked the young people to emulate them.

Museveni further commended Nakabira for her commitment to development and poverty eradication in her constituency.

“Whenever Nakabira meets me, she asks for things targeting improving household incomes and poverty eradication, which are the main problem for Uganda. Poverty is the main challenge to our society and we can defeat it through modern agriculture and being systematic other than engaging in ceremonial agriculture that earns no returns,” he said.

The President also urged Ugandans to test and establish their HIV status, which he said is healthy and good for planning one’s life.

He attributed the new infections to “unseriousness in the black race” “We know how AIDS spreads, why should we mishandle our lives? ARVs are not a cure and they have so many side effects, yet you know that health is wealth,” he said.
