Police officers will get a comprehensive medical and life insurance scheme, Inspector-General David Kimaiyo has said

.
Mr Kimaiyo said on Saturday the scheme will replace the current risk allowance paid to police officers. He said the government had already approved the move.

Currently, police officers get a risk allowance of between Sh9,000 and Sh15,000 depending on their rank.

The officers often have to foot their own hospital bills and only get workman’s compensation when an officer is injured or killed while on duty.

Mr Kimaiyo also said the National Police Service was pursuing the issue of salary increment for officers with the Salary and Remuneration Commission as it awaits the finalisation of the general salary survey in the wider public service.
