Mkapa Foundation inaugurates 20 houses for health workers

HAZLA OMAR in Monduli
THE Benjamin Mkapa Foundation has inaugurated 20 houses that the organisation has built for local medical workers in rural areas of Arusha Region.

The Mkapa Foundation has built two modern houses per every health centre in Monduli and Ngorongoro districts, where living quarters for hospital workers have been the major problem for ages.
Speaking at Mungere village in the Silalei Ward of Monduli District where two of the houses were unveiled, the Chief Executive Officer of the Benjamin W. Mkapa Foundation, Dr Ellen Mkondya- Senkoro, said the project which has cost 1.1bn/- has taken three years to be completed.
She added that the Foundation has been entrusted by the Ministry of Health to build 480 similar housing units in 51 councils across the nation and among them 20 have been constructed in Arusha Region, 10 in Monduli and the other 10 in Ngorongoro.
“In addition to building the 20 houses in Monduli and Ngorongoro districts, the Benjamin Mkapa Foundation has also contributed in the health sector for Arusha Region through employing and bringing here 35 health workers who have been serving in medical laboratories, government hospitals and public health centres,” explained Dr Senkoro.
Benjamin Mkapa Foundation has also awarded scholarship to 19 students from health centres in Arusha Region so that they may acquire Medical Officer Certification required to secure employment in government hospitals.
The Permanent Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children, Dr Mpoki Ulisubisya, inaugurated the houses in the Makuyuni Division of Monduli and afterwards headed for same exercise in Ngorongoro District.
Dr Ulisibisya advised the District Councils to ensure that they set aside funds for renovation of structures especially those built by local and foreign development partners so that they may be encouraged to extend more assistance to public services and community initiatives.
“These buildings are very beautiful to look at, being new but the councils need to ensure that this fresh look is maintained so that when former President Benjamin Mkapa visits them in future he may be encouraged to do even more,” he said.
The Housing Project for Health Workers in Arusha has been undertaken by three firms, including the Cadson Company Limited, who worked for eight units in Lolkisale, Mferejini, Mungere and Moita- Bwawani.
