NYAKUNGURU Village leaders have said they strongly support the government decision to investigate more than 800 fake names of people demanding compensation from North Mara Gold Mine, operated by Acacia Gold Mine.
The alleged fake names were established
by the committee of senior government officials formed by the Minister
for Energy and Minerals, Professor Sospeter Muhongo last year to screen
problems of land acquisition and compensation at the mine.
Of late the Tarime District Commissioner
(DC), Mr Glorious Luoga addressing a rally at Nyamichele sub village,
disclosed the findings of the committee and informed the villagers that
the report of the findings would be handed to the Prevention and
Combating Corruption (PCCB) for further investigation.
According to the findings, 883 names of
people found in the pay list were entitled to get compensation from the
gold mine, however, at the same time also the names lack authenticity to
qualify for compensation.
The DC said investigation into the
matter is expected to be ready late this month (January) and thereafter a
clean pay list would be given to the mining firm for compensation
payment immediately.
Speaking to reporters late last week,
Nyakungu Village Government Chairperson Mr Abel Maginga said it was
crucial for relevant state organs to be given time to scrutinize the
names in order to establish the plain truth.
“Since the committee has established
that there are fake names and farms let us give them time to do the
investigation “, Mr Maginga said.Other village government members said
they also need the list of all names said to be fake so that they can
also go through them. Several hundreds of villagers are complaining that
it has taken so long for them to be compensated
