Prayers for the nation and other
celebrations coloured most parts of the country on Saturday evening as
the clock was ticking towards 2017. Hundreds of Dar es Salaam residents
ushered in the New Year at the National Stadium where the event was held
nationally on Saturday night.
Deputy National Assembly Speaker, Dr
Tulia Ackson, who represented President John Magufuli at the event as
guest of honour, appealed to Tanzanians to find means of healing the
nation through prayers and hard work, which the Fifth Phase Government
has been emphasizing all along.
“The year 2017 should be the year for
working hard for every one of us,” she said when graced the event.
Speaking at the event, Tanzania Fellowship of Churches (TFC) Bishop
Godfrey Malassy said church leaders were pleased with the Fifth Phase
Government’s performance.
He said TFC leaders had seen the good
performance of the current government, noting that so far they have
observed positive changes. “We have been organising such an event for
the past 19 years, praying for our nation.
We thank God that He has now heard our
prayers because we see a new Tanzania under President John Magufuli’s
leadership,” said Bishop Malassy, who was chairman of the organising
committee of the New Year Eve event.
“The country has now started witnessing
positive changes in terms of the fight against corruption, inequality
and so on,” he stressed. He prayed for President Magufuli -- that God
may protect him and shower him with wisdom in leading the country and
continue with the same speed he had started with. “You have our support
as religious leaders; we are with you.
We will never leave you alone in your
efforts,” religious leaders pledged in the statement. At St Peters
Church in Dar es Salaam, Tanzanians were reminded to pray for their
national leaders since the fifth phase government is determined to
bringing development to all citizens.
Speaking during the New Year mass,
Reverend Father Stephano Kaombe told the faithful who had congregated at
the church that he was supporting the government’s interventions in
improving lives of Tanzanians. “We should pray for our spiritual
leaders.
We should not forget to pray for our
government’s leaders who work hard every day to make sure that
Tanzanians enjoy what their country is blessed with,” he noted. He,
however, called upon Christians and Tanzanians in general to abstain
from corruption and instead strive to be ambassadors in fighting the
vice because it undermined development.
In Mwanza, the Regional Commissioner, Mr
John Mongela, challenged the civil servants and all the workers in
different productive sectors to work hard and stop complaining on the
new style of leadership showcased by the government’s top leadership.
Mr Mongela said there has been a
tendency of some workers in various sectors feeling bad for being
pressed to work diligently and honestly, contrary to past practices and
norms.
The RC, who was giving his New Year
message at the Kirumba Valley Christian Centre (KVCC), said his office
has already declared the 2017 as year of dedication and hard work,
calling for the Mwanza residents to shun business as usual working style
since it had nothing to offer towards sustainable economic development
of the region.
“Earlier, the KVCC Leader, Pastor
Geofrey Lugwisha, asked for God to bless the country and its leaders to
press on forward and upward with new strength from him.
cial milestones were possible beyond. On
his part, Dar es Salaam Regional Sheikh, Alhaj Alhad Mussa Salum, said:
“As we welcome 2017, the people should have a duty to support the
government’s efforts by working hard. Telling people to work hard is
conveying a prophetic message,” he pointed out
