Indian top surgeon to perform complex surgery in Dar next month

SUNDAY NEWS REPORTER
A RENOWNED Reconstructive Surgeon from India, who is also Head and Neck Oncology Specialist, Dr Subramaniam Iyer, is expected to visit the country next month and perform complex surgeries to Tanzanian patients with serious congenital or accident related burn injuries or any other deformities.

Speaking to Sunday News in Dar es Salaam yesterday, the Sanitas Hospital Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Murthy Venkateswaran, said the visiting Surgeon would perform surgeries at Sanitas hospital for four days from December 7 to 10.
The Sanitas boss said Dr Iyer would be visiting the country for the fifth time following four successful medical visits which saw him attending to a number of patients in Tanzania.
He will correct ugly scar revisions, cleft lip, facial paralysis and other deformity corrections, AV Fistula, rhinoplasty, all ear, nose, throat (ENT) problems and more, including breast reduction and reduction of body fat in other parts of the body where required.
“This problem (excessive fats) is common in females where lower abdomen, side of the chest and upper arms store fat. The problem leads to deformation of women’s bodies and could lead to lack of self confidence and obesity, including obesity-related issues like diabetes, hypertension and others,” he said.
He said women with these problems could be helped at Sanitas hospital by being operated upon using a small, 5mm incision in hidden areas through the process of liposuction. Mr Murthy further noted that technology in the field of medicine and surgeries is developing very rapidly but was somewhat slow to reach Tanzania.
“India is right at the epicenter of this technological development and implementation. Therefore, surgeons like Dr Iyer bring a wealth of knowledge, skills, techniques and experience that Tanzanians can take advantage of when they come here,” he said.
Mr Murthy further noted that Sanitas hospital was planning to start a head and neck surgery department to correct deformity of the face like cleft lips and palate, nasal deformities, tumours of thyroid and parotid gland, paralysis of the face, rhinoplasty and head and neck cancers.
