THE Indian High Commission in Tanzania has donated 490 science and mathematics textbooks to seven Advanced Level schools in Dar es Salaam Region in support of government's efforts in sensitizing and influencing students to learn the subjects.
Indian Deputy High Commissioner, Mr
Robert Shetkintong said the books will be provided to three secondary
schools of Ilala municipality, two secondary schools in Kinondoni
municipality and two other secondary schools of Temeke municipal
council.
He made the remarks over the weekend
when handing over the textbooks to the representatives of the seven
schools that include Kawe Ukwamani and Goba secondary schools of
Kinondoni, Temeke and Saint Anthony secondary schools in Temeke
municipality and Jangwani, Juhudi and Shaaban Robert schools in Ilala
municipality.
Each school has received a total of 70
textbooks for the subjects. Mr Shetkintong said the textbooks have been
provided by the High Commission of India in collaboration with the
Indian Cultural Centre, Bank of Baroda and Bank of India.
"Our goal is to enable more students
develop interest to learn science and mathematic subjects,” he said,
adding that Dar es Salaam is a pilot region, the project will also in
future involve more schools in other regions too.
The Headmaster of Shaaban Robert
Secondary School, Mr Turyakant Ramji, on behalf of other representatives
from other schools that benefited with the aid, said the move was the
right direction towards solving the shortage of teaching aid challenges
facing schools.
"This aid will not only be a big boost
for academic performance but will raise students' morale in studying
science hence increase number of scientists in the country," said Mr
Ramji and thanked the High Commission for their valuable support in
improving the quality of education.
However, Mr Ramji advised Tanzanian
schools to use the textbooks which are written in the country than using
books prepared in favour of teaching students of other countries
because it is not helpful in improving the education sector.
According to him, teaching the students
by using the textbooks prepared by the relevant country not only helps
to improve education sector but also boost the development of printing
industry which will increase employment opportunity and stimulate the
country's econom
