The Kenya Planters Co-operative Union (KPCU) is among seven private
companies that have applied for licences to market coffee directly to
local and foreign buyers.
KPCU and four others Orion East Africa, Nimble Goat Coffee, Mumbi Coffee Merchants and Inyuat Farm Fresh Company Ltd, have requested the Coffee Directorate to grant them a dealer’s permit, which will allow them to source for the beans directly from societies for sale.
Embu’s Kensam Farm Limited and Kerugoya’s Kabumbu Coffee Estate are seeking permission to directly market their own product away from the traditional practice where all coffee must be sold through the Nairobi Coffee Auction.
The Agricultural Fisheries and Food Authority (Affa) interim director-general, Mr Alfred Busolo, urged stakeholders to peruse the applications and offer their views before Affa finally makes public its decision within the next two weeks.
