Strike looms in Tazara over delay in arrears

DAILY NEWS Reporter
EMPLOYEES of the Tanzania Zambia Railway Authority (TAZARA) are threatening to go on strike after the management failed to honour the directive of Chief Secretary (CS), Ambassador Ombeni Sefue, to pay them their dues this month.
Speaking to journalists, the TAZARA Workers Union (TRAWU) Deputy Chairman Yasin Mleki, said the workers are demanding their salary arrears for the month of January and June and the balance of four months.

He said that the problem started when the management on the Tanzanian side decided to pay themselves huge salary arrears, while knowing very well that the employees are still demanding for their dues.
However, the TAZARA Deputy Managing Director, Dr Betram Kiswaga, confessed that indeed the workers are demanding for their dues, saying that efforts to bring the union leaders and the management together to seek for a solution is in progress.
He said that earlier discussions between the two parties failed, which forced the CS and the Permanent Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Transport, Dr Shaaban Mwinjaka, to meet with workers and the management on the 17th of October, this year to discuss the issue.
In their discussion, Amb Sefue said it is sad to see workers toiling without getting their dues, saying that the government has intervened in the matter and that it will pay arrears from July, but the management should pay arrears from June downwards.
In the agreement, the Zambia TAZARA Managing Director Ronald Phiri and his Tanzanian counterpart agreed before the CS that they will pay the arrears at the end of October or early November.
“It is surprising that today (yesterday) the month is almost over and nothing has been done and they are quiet about it, that is why the workers are threatening to strike,” said Mleki.
He said that the TAZARA management in Dar es Salaam when asked when they intend to implement the CS’ directive said they are still working on it
