- Tasks ministries to lead unified environmental conservation plan
DODOMA: VICE-PRESIDENT Dr Emmanuel Nchimbi has called on ministries responsible for environmental matters to work collaboratively in developing a unified plan aimed at ensuring sustainable environmental conservation.
Dr Nchimbi made the call yesterday in Dodoma. during a meeting with ministers and environmental experts to discuss strategies for strengthening environmental protection.
The meeting was attended by the Minister for Natural Resources and Tourism, Dr Ashatu Kijaji; Minister of State in the Vice-President’s Office (Union and Environment), Engineer Hamad Masauni, Deputy Minister for Water Mr Kundo Mathew, Deputy Minister in the Vice- President’s Office (Union and Environment), Mr Festo Dugange; and the Permanent Secretary in the Vice-President’s Office (Union and Environment) Dr Richard Muyungi.
Dr Nchimbi stressed that many ministries depend directly on environmental conservation for their operations.
He noted, for example, that the Ministry of Water can only perform effectively if water sources are properly protected.
He added that promoting the use of clean cooking energy would help reduce deforestation and safeguard forests.
The Vice-President urged leaders to intensify efforts to make Tanzania a model country in environmental protection, noting that the nation possesses abundant forests and skilled professionals capable of achieving this goal.
He also said that President Samia Suluhu Hassan has championed environmental protection through initiatives such as the national greening programme and nationwide tree-planting campaigns, often using her birthday to promote the exercise.
Dr Nchimbi called on officials to develop strategies that ensure planted trees are properly maintained so that tree-planting programmes achieve their intended results.
He also commended the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism for implementing the national tree-planting campaign in line with International Day of Forests.

Recently, Dr Muyungi announced that Tanzania has been selected to host a youth training centre focusing on environmental issues and climate change.
He said the decision was made by the African Union Committee of Heads of State and Government on Climate Change during its 39th Ordinary Session held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, on February 14–15, which was attended by President Samia Suluhu Hassan.
“The centre will provide Tanzanian youth with opportunities to gain knowledge about environmental issues and expand the country’s participation in international climate discussions,” Dr Muyungi said during a special iftar event for environmental stakeholders at the Institute of Environment, Climate Change and Sustainable Development in Bunju, Dar es Salaam.
Speaking at the event, United Nations Environment Programme Environmental Ambassador Frida Amani emphasised the importance of youth participation in environmental protection.
“Environmental and climate change issues dominate global debates. Young people must seize opportunities to ensure these agendas create positive change in society,” she said.
Ms Amani, a wellknown Bongo Flava musician, urged young people to collaborate with the government in conservation efforts.
