Tanzania’s founding father, Julius Kambarage Nyerere in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia today.The statue has been erected at the Mwalimu Julius Nyerere Peace and Security Building in the city where heroes and heroines of the African Union (AU), who paid the ultimate price in AU peace support missions across the continent are honoured.
Apart from that, President Samia is expected to attend the 37th African Union (AU) Summit for Heads of State and Government Officials whose climax is today.
Minister for Culture, Arts and Sports, Damas Ndumbaro who is already in Ethiopia is among other senior government officials from Tanzania who witnessed the historic occasion.
He made the remarks on Friday after paying a courtesy call to the place where the magnificent statue stands still in honour of the fallen hero.
The African Union unveiled the commemorative statue of Emperor Haile Selassie at the 32nd African Union Summit in Addis Ababa on 10 February 2019.
The statue of the Emperor is an important recognition of his effort towards Africa’s liberation and unity leading to the formation of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) in 1963.
The Former Ethiopian Leader and Pan-Africanist’s statue is the second to be erected at the AU headquarters. In 2012, the statue of Ghanaian Pan-Africanist Kwame Nkrumah was unveiled during the inauguration of the new AU headquarters in Addis Ababa.
