Mchengerwa warns irresponsible public officials

KAGERA, Bukoba THE Minister of State in President’s Office, Regional Administration and Local Government Mr Mohamed Mchengerwa has directed the Permanent Secretary (PS) in his docket to revoke with immediate effect the appointment of Kagera Regional

Medical Officer (RMO), Dr Kaniki Issessanda for failing to execute his duties accord ingly.

Equally, he has strongly warned irresponsible public officials, saying he will not hesitate to take stern disciplinary action against those who will fail to execute their duties.

Mr Mchengerwa made the remarks on Friday while in Bukoba Municipality where, among other things, he witnessed the signing of contracts involving a 410 million US dollars project to modernise 15 municipalities and cities in Tanzania (TACTIC).

“I have received complaints from citizens regarding poor ser – vices at the Bukoba Regional Referral Hospital (BRRH). Just last week, a child died while receiving medical treatment at the health facility. The body of the child was retained for two days by some of the workers demanding payment from the parents. This is contrary to the government directives,” he said.

Mr Mchengerwa explained that President Samia Suluhu Hassan was implementing people-oriented projects and had allocated huge budget for improving social services in key sectors including health, education, water and infrastructure development. He explained that he had also received reports that some of the councillors under Bukoba Municipal Council were opposing Member of Parliament (MP) for Bukoba Urban, Mr Stephen Byabato and were not happy to see the projects being implemented.

“These efforts should be supported. We shall not tolerate any individual who will attempt to undermine these efforts,” he warned.

He directed Regional Commissioners (RCs), District Commissioners (DCs) and District Executive Directors (DEDs) across the country to get out of their offices and visit wananchi in rural areas to hear their grievances and find solutions…” do not wait for national leaders to do this work,” he said.

The TACTIC project will be implemented under three Tillers.

Towns/Municipalities under Tiller 1 include Arusha, Geita, Dodoma, Ilemela, Kahama, Kigoma, Mbeya, Morogoro, Mwanza, Songea, Sumbawanga and Tabora.

Tiller 2 includes Babati, Bariadi, Bukoba, Iringa, Kibaha, Korogwe, Lindi, Moshi, Mpanda, Mtwara, Musoma, Njombe, Singida, Shinyanga and Tanga.

Tiller 3 are Bagamoyo, Bunda, Chato, Handeni, Ifakara, Kasulu, Kondoa, Mafinga, Makambako, Masasi, Mbinga, Mbulu, Nanyamba, Newala, Nzega, Tarime, Tunduma and Vwawa. Tiller 1 will be implemented during 2023/2024 while Tiller 2 and 3 will be implemented in 2024/2025.

Minister Mchengerwa disclosed that about 1.789bn/- has been allocated for Bukoba Municipality’s projects involving the construction of a new bus terminal at Kyakailabwa area, construction of a modern market complex, conservation of River Kanoni (7.3 km), upgrading of a 7-km road network and installation of solar street lights.
