Dar es Salaam. The Tanzania National
Roads Agency (Tanroads) has announced that Nyerere Road will be closed for
three months due to the construction of the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).
In
a public notice by the agency's Dar es Salaam Regional Manager, the area to be
closed is at the intersection of Nyerere and Shaurimoyo roads.
The
authority said the road will be closed from Sunday, May 28, and will be
reopened on Saturday, September 30, 2023, when construction is complete
During the construction period,
motorists and pedestrians are advised to use alternative roads; Kawawa,
Veta-Chang'ombe, Shaurimoyo, Kilwa and the diversion road built on the edge of
the construction area.
"Tanroads apologises for any
inconvenience caused during construction," reads part of the statement.
If
you are new to Dar es Salaam, Nyerere Road is one of the main roads in the
city. Previously known as Pugu Road because it goes from the city center to
Pugu in the southwest of Dar es Salaam.
This
road starts at Gerezani Street, passes the Tazara railway station and the
Julius Nyerere International Airport, and continues to Gongo la Mboto.
At
the intersection of Nyerere Road and Nelson Mandela Road, there is the
Mfugale flyover, which has helped reduce traffic congestion in the area.
