Ministry tasks nurses, midwives to adhere to professionalism

THE Ministry of Health (MoH) has asked nurses and midwives to ensure that they adhere to ethics and professionalism, so that they can provide better services to the

people.

Speaking in Dodoma on Monday at the opening of the Nursing and Midwifery leaders forum, the Permanent Secretary in the docket Dr Seif Shekalaghe said that nurses are important people in the provision of health services to the community because they are always close to patients.

“When a patient arrives at the hospital to see the doctor, he/she must be seen by a nurse, it is the same case when the patient is admitted, doing the monitoring and administering medicines as prescribed by doctors,” he said.

This five-day session aims at discussing the maximising roles of nurses and midwives to sustain health system resilience and improve quality care. It has brought together 280 nurses and midwives from 26 regions of mainland Tanzania, who have registered with the council of nurses and midwives.

Dr Shekalaghe also challenged them to ensure that customer services are provided with quality in accordance with all the instructions contained in their ethical code of conduct as well as their work oaths.

Dr Shekalaghe has also reminded the nurses and midwives to remain united and work together so that they can work efficiently and provide quality services.

“I ask you to love each other and work as a team, this will help you solve challenges you are facing,” he said.

On his part, the Clinical Services Assistant Director Paul Magesa said that the main objective of the meeting was to discuss how to improve the provision of health services, especially focusing on how to reduce maternal and child mortality.

“We are facing some challenges that lead to maternal and child mortality death, I hope after this session, we will be able to have resolutions on how we will go to work to ensure that we reduce the number of maternal mortality,” he said.

Magesa said that during the meeting, participants will also discuss the topics of implementation of Nursing process, implementation of leadership guidelines to improve governance, innovation, professional issues and away forward along with Unified Community System.
