Before their approval, the nominees are required to declare their wealth before being appointed to a public office as required by the constitution.
The constitution requires that public servants declare their wealth to help the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to detect and prevent corruption.
In that regard, a report by the National Assembly’s Committee on Defence and Foreign Relations revealed the net worth of the 21 ambassadorial nominees.
The committee, however, only revealed their net worth in block figures without revealing a detailed breakdown of the sources of their wealth.
From the report, published by Business Daily, Kenya’s China ambassador-designate Mary Muthoni, a businesswoman-cum-seasoned lawyer, emerged as the richest on the list with a net worth of Ksh.400 million.
Following on the list is former nominated MP Amina Abdalla who revealed that her net worth is Ksh.340 million. Abdalla will take up ambassadorial duties in Oman.
Former Information Communications and Technology (ICT) Principal Secretary Bitange Ndemo came third in the rich list with a net worth of Ksh.190 million.
The former PS is headed to Belgium as Kenya’s new envoy.
Fourth on the list is the outgoing National Assembly Clerk Michael Sialia who is headed to Namibia with a net worth of Ksh.151 million.
Gitonga Chege who is set to take up his posting in Cuba, and ambassador-designate to Qatar Boniface Mwilu are next on the list with each said to be worth Sh.150 million.
Major General George Owino who is headed to Kampala as Kenya’s ambassador to Uganda is seventh with a net worth of Ksh.140 million.
There is a four-way split with Charles Gituai (IGAD), Clement Nzomo (Angola), Paul Ndung’u (Mozambique), Galma Boru (Indonesia), and Leonard Boiyo (Turkey) all revealed that they are each worth Ksh.100 million.
Richard Bosire (UNESCO) and Michael Okoth (Spain) declared that they are worth Ksh.75 million.
The two were followed by Mary Kamau (Pakistan) and Mary Wangui (Australia) who said they are worth Ksh.97 million and Ksh.70 million respectively.
Thomas Chepkuto who will take up duties in Somalia said that his net assets are worth Ksh.58.6 million.
