Bobi Wine calls for unity among Opposition groups

MITYANA- Kyandondo East Member of Parliament, Mr Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine who
recently declared his intention to contest for the 2021 presidential elections, on Sunday asked Dr Kizza Besigye, the former leader of the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), and other forces of change, to stop bickering but join efforts to take on President Yoweri Museveni.

''We need a joint effort with other all opposition parties and groups to stand as one team to take over government instead of creating conflicts among ourselves,” he said.

Mr Kyagulanyi, who campaigns under the People Power political movement, was speaking at a thanksgiving party that was organised by Mityana Municipality Member of Parliament, Mr Francis Zaake Butebi in Mityana.

He said that some people who don’t want a united Opposition were behind a group of hooligans who attacked Dr Besigye at Bulange Mengo, where he had attended a talk show on CBS radio.

“People Power movement is a non-violent and does not condone acts of violence against anyone. That was a malicious ploy aimed at tarnishing the image of People Power movement and to create a rift between the group and supporters of Dr Besigye,” he said.

Mr Kyagulanyi said that although elections in Uganda are hardly free and fair, he believes that the current government can be defeated through peaceful means like elections, if all Ugandans register to vote and massively turn out to vote.

 However, some people especially the youth, reported to him that they are being denied forms to acquire national identity cards, by officials of the National Identification and Registration Authority in Mityana, a claim Daily Monitor could not readily verify.

Mr Zaake, who, was recently bailed over treason charges, asked security operatives to stop intimidating his family members.

''Whatever I do, I do it as Zaake without any assistance from my father. Stop intimidating them. Leave my mother and my father alone and only deal with me,” he said.

He said that his father, a prominent businessman in Mityana town has been accused of defiling a 17- year-old in order to tarnish his name and to weaken his business empire.

Mr Zaake said he is ready to spend years in prison if that is what it takes to save Ugandans from corruption and dictatorship.

 Rev Fr Steven Lusiba appealed to government to tackle Uganda’s problems than harassing and intimidating members of Opposition.

''Uganda has many issues to settle. Uganda-Rwanda border is closed. Work on those problems than arresting Opposition leaders,” Rev  Lusiba said.
