President Kenyatta suspends new government projects Picha

PRESIDENT Uhuru Kenyatta has ordered a freeze in government that effectively puts on hold all new projects.
The head of state wants all government departments to concentrate on projects that are ongoing to ensure their completion within stipulated time.

He said the suspension, which comes at a time when he has undertaken to deal a massive blow to runaway corruption within his administration, will stop wastage of public resources.
Kenyatta announced the freeze amid a stern warning that any government accounting officer who will disregard this order risks prosecution. Going forward, President Kenyatta expects that any new project will be sanctioned by the Minister in charge of Treasury President Kenyatta disclosed that the move has been necessitated by the need to rein in on a regrettable decades-old tradition where government agencies have had a habit of abandoning incomplete projects before jumping onto others.
“There will be no new projects that will be embarked on until you complete those that are ongoing,” said the President Speaking during a meeting with top government accounting officers who included Principal Secretaries, Heads of Parastatals, Vice Chancellors of Public Universities and Chairmen of State Corporations, Kenyatta however hinted that projects that are directly aligned to government’s Big Four Agenda might be exempted from the freeze. But even those in charge of these projects are not at liberty to commission them.
“Even if new projects are aligned to the Big Four they cannot be started without express authority from the Cabinet Secretary or Principal Secretary of the National Treasury,” said President Kenyatta.
President Kenyatta warned that government officials who embark on new projects before finishing ongoing initiatives without authorization will be held responsible.
At the same time, President Kenyatta announced that the Government will soon launch a new internet portal where all procurements will be publicized.
The President said all procurements, tenders and contracts will be advertised on the portal to create transparency in order to safeguard public resources from theft
