Police intercept Jimi Wanjigi to serve court summons

Drama unfolded on Museum Hill Road in Nairobi on Wednesday afternoon as plainclothes police officers intercepted a vehicle belonging to businessman Jimi Wanjigi.

Mr Wanjigi is said to have refused to roll down his vehicle’s window and instead took a video of the rifle-wielding officers.

The officers, believed to be from a special police unit, are seen in the video demanding that Mr Wanjigi opens the window so that he can be served with a notice to appear in a Nyeri court Thursday morning to answer to criminal charges.

But, after noticing that the commotion was causing a scene, they pinned the notice on the windscreen of Mr Wanjigi’s vehicle.

The notice states that Mr Wanjigi appears before the Nyeri Magistrate’s court at 8 am on Thursday to answer to an unspecified criminal charge, which was only described as “251 of 2018”.

“You are hereby commanded to attend this court at 8 am on March 1, 2018 and not depart without leave of the court or until the case is finished,” the notice read.

After the officers left, Mr Wanjigi told journalists and onlookers that the government is out to frustrate him because of his political stand.

“It is going to be over soon. Kenyans, I am telling you, a dawn is coming. These dark days are going to be behind us soon,” Mr Wanjigi said.
