THE new Mara Regional Commissioner (RC) Mr Adam Malima has sworn to wipe out Gender Based Violence (GBV) acts in the region including supporting campaigns against it.
“This uncouth behaviour of beating women
or seeing them as people of no value in the society must stop,” he said
while addressing government officials in Tarime recently. He said GBV
against women and girls must become a thing of the past in the region,
adding that he was starting with Tarime District to send the message.
Mr Malima ordered head of community
development departments in Tarime District Council and Tarime Town
Council to provide him with regular reports on GBV acts in the area.
“I also want to know the numbers of GBV
acts for the past five years to study the trend. I want to know them in
five days,” he ordered.
In so doing, the RC said he would be
able to assess the situation and understand the level of GBV acts on the
victims, instead of leaving the image of the area to be tainted as a
notorious zone in the crime.
Briefing the RC on the crime, Tarime
District Commissioner (DC) Mr Glorious Luoga said he has managed to
reduce it from 74 to 32 per cent without going into the details, with
the support of some stakeholders in the campaign.
He said the campaigns have resulted into
serious interventions as witnessed by local and international
organisations in the recent years leading them.
The occasion was also presided over by
Children Dignity Forum (CDF), a local organisation that takes part in
the ongoing campaign including ending female genital mutilation (FGM),
child marriage and teenage pregnancies with the support of FORWARD UK
and Comic Relief from UK.
The NGO also supports the victims by
providing them with entrepreneurship skills as well as small loans to
start up local income generating activities.
