Construction of houses for public school teachers countrywide is being undertaken at accelerated pace, the National Assembly was told yesterday.
Deputy Minister in the President’s
Office (Regional Administration and Local Government), Selemani Jaffo,
said the project is part of government’s plan to improve the welfare of
teachers who currently work in a hostile environment.
He made these remarks when responding to
Special- Seat MP Juliana Shonza (CCM) who wanted to know government’s
plan to improve the infrastructure in rural schools -- including
teachers’ houses.
The minister noted that in the 2016/17
fiscal year, the government has set aside 13.9bn/- for building 1,157
houses for primary school teachers and 11.14bn/- for erecting 661 houses
for secondary school teachers.
He said 146 houses out of the planned 183 were built at a cost of 21.9bn/-. Each house will accommodate six teachers.
Other 37 houses worth 5.5bn/- are still
under construction and are expected to be completed in April this year.
Meanwhile, Jaffo assured teachers that government is continuing with
procedures to pay their arrears after assessing the debt.
In October 2015, the government paid
20.12bn/- to 44,700 teachers and in February last year 1.1bn/- was paid
to 3,221 teachers, he said. Currently, the government owes 26.04bn/- to
37,620 teachers and 2,134 who have retired.
