THE government in partnership with the UK Department for International Development (UKAID) yesterday launched a performance based financing scheme in the water sector worth 78 million pound (about 200bn/).

authorities (LGA) in the country and provides them with additional
funding for improvements in service provision and maintenance of water
infrastructure. Some of the scheme benefiting districts in 2017 include
Wanging’ombe and Makete in Iringa Region and Maswa in Shinyanga.
They are among the 57 eligible districts
that met the qualification criteria, including functioning water and
sanitation team, credible water and sanitation plan, timely reports and
accurate data on water points.
Water and Irrigation Minister Gerson
Lwenge and Minister of State in President’s Office, Regional
Administration and Local Government, George Simbachawene officiated at
the launch event here.
Speaking at the ceremony, Engineer
Lwenge expressed his gratitude to the UK government, stressing on the
innovative nature of the scheme, “This scheme is one of the very few
innovative programmes and complements the government’s strides to
provide 85 per cent of rural population with sustainable access to clean
and safe water by 2020.
” Mr Simbachawene said of the scheme, “I
instruct all district executive directors to ensure their districts
qualify for the next round. It is your responsibility to ensure district
