Road construction delays irks Reps

ISSA YUSSUF in Zanzibar
Mr Mohamed Raza Hassanali (Uzini)
AN outcry on delays in implementation of promises by the president to improve roads in rural areas, and unclear benefits of the e-government/fibre optic prompted some backbenchers to vote against the 2016/2017 budget estimates Infrastructure, Communication, and Transport.
Mr Mohamed Raza Hassanali (Uzini), Mr Omar Seif Abeid (Konde) and Mr Hassan Khamis Hafidh (Welezo) listed roads earmarked for improvement by President Ali Mohamed Shein during his first term in office, but have not been implemented to date.
“The people, particularly those engaged in farming, including clove production, get difficulties in transporting their harvests. Why delay the work even after the president has pledged improvements?” the legislators queried.
Mr Simai Mohamed Said (Tunguu) wanted to know how the government has been benefiting from the e-government/ fibre optic project, including its agreement with the ZANTEL mobile company
