TWO officials, Flora Lengwana and Beatrice Mlingi, appeared before Kisutu Resident Magistrate’s Court in Dar es Salaam charged with three counts, including occasioning loss of over 185m/- to the National Examination Council of Tanzania (NECTA).
The duo, Flora, an Accountant with the
Ministry of Education and Vocational Training and Beatrice, who is an
officer at Stanbic bank, were also charged with forging a cheque and
diverting the money into a private company account.
They denied the charges before Principal
Resident Magistrate, Thomas Simba. They were granted bail on conditions
of securing two sureties each upon signing bond of 50m/-.
One of the sureties for each accused,
according to the magistrate, was required to deposit in court 50m/-cash
bail or surrender title deed of immovable property certified at the said
amount. None of the two accused persons managed to meet the conditions.
They were ordered to go back to remand
prison until June 30, when the case comes for preliminary hearing, as
investigations into the matter, according to the prosecution, have been
completed.
The prosecution, led by a prosecutor
from the Preventing and combating of Corruption Bureau (PCCB), Leonard
Swai, alleged that between April 1 and May 31, 2010 at unknown place
within the city, the accused persons, with intent to defraud, forged a
cheque.
According to the prosecution, the
accused persons purported to show 185,350,000/- was supposed to be
credited to the account of Ranbaxy Pharmaceutical Industries Limited,
the fact which they knew to be false.
On June 8, 2010 at Stanbic Bank Head
Quarters office within Dar es Salaam, the accused persons allegedly,
intentionally diverted the said amount of money to the account of
Ranbaxy Pharmaceutical Industries Limited, which was intended to pay to
the National Examinational Council of Tanzania.
The prosecution told the court further
that on the same date and place, the accused persons, with their willful
acts, caused NECTA to suffer a pecuniary loss of the said 185,350,000/-
