THE government has revived plans to construct a modern bus stop at Segera high way in Handeni District to boost revenue collection.
Tanga Regional Commissioner Martin
Shigela said here over the weekend that the council will look for
resources to continue with construction of the modern bus stop in three
phases.
“I am not ready to see dormant projects
like Segera which were established to increase revenues for the councils
in the region,’’ said RC Shigela. Currently, only business stalls
construction are the only items remaining to make it operate.
The bus stop was supposed to start in
2012 when the project was launched but due to lack of funds it could not
materialise. But, the regional authorities have expressed their
commitment to ensure that it is executed as planned.
Mr Shigela has formed a special team
that will find ways to get the needed fund to finish up the project. The
team comprises of the Regional officer in charge Surface and Marine
Transport Regulatory Authority (SUMATRA) Dr Walukani Luhamba.
Following the RC’s directives, the team
visited the project site for sightseeing and planning a way forwards
after getting the actual situation. The Handeni District Executive
Director Lwiza Mlelwa told the team that the project has been slow due
to SUMATRA.
The council acting treasurer Julius
Bachuta said the purpose was to collect 8m/- monthly. SUMATRA Regional
Manager said the project stalled due to failure by the council to
implement directives.
He cited the steep slope at the area
which can cause accident while passenger buses get out. Sumatra also had
demanded the widening of the exit gate.
