TANZANIAN government has pledged to work closely with the European Union Business Group (EUBG) towards addressing challenges facing the private sector in the country.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of
Trade, Industry and Investment Adolf Mkenda, speaking at the EUBG first
anniversary celebrations in Dar es Salaam over the weekend, described
the group as an extraordinary milestone.
“The formation of 70 private sector
members is not an easy task and for real EUBG deserves accolades,” said
professor Mkenda. EUBG Chairman Morten Juul said the group whose mission
is to offer a platform for members to gain knowledge of the business
environment has since its inception made significant strides.
He cited the achievements as strong
relationship and dialogue with key institutions like Tanzania Revenue
Authority, Ministry of Finance, Immigration and Labour departments.
Ambassador Roeland van der Gees, EU Head
of Delegation to Tanzania and the East African Community commended EUBG
for registering a considerable number of members, promising immense EU
support in its endeavour towards promoting trade between Europe and
Tanzania. “Owing to its potentials, EU is ready to invest in Tanzania
and promote mutual cooperation,” said the EU head.
EUBG Executive Director Rose Blackie
said EUBG seeks to promote trade and investment between European and
Tanzanian companies. Tanzania and the EU have long standing trade and
investment relationship.
The EU is Tanzania’s first export
destination and the country’s third trading partner. Over 16 per cent of
Tanzania’s exports to the world are directed to EU’s 28 member states,
with total trade between Tanzania and EU amounting to €1,457 million in
2013
