Over 7,000 retire from public service

deputy minister,
She said that of the 7,055 servants, 5,057 have been paid their terminal benefits. According to the deputy minister, a total of 1,998 retirees have not been paid their terminal benefits because of various reasons.

Among the reasons, Dr Kijaji said, includes lack of different essential documents in retirees’ files and late submission of the documents by employers to prove the genuineness of the retirees before establishment of social security funds in July 1999.
The deputy minister was answering some questions by Kasuku Bilago (Buyungu-Chadema), who had explained that there had been complaints from retirees over unpaid terminal benefits after their retirements.
He, therefore, sought to know the number of public servants who retired between January and December last year, the number of those who have been paid their entitlements and the reasons behind the failure to effect the payments. In a supplementary question, the MP pointed out that there were two categories, some getting payments from social security funds and other from Treasury.
He said that those from social security funds have been paid their pensions monthly while those from the Treasury get paid quarterly, that is, in each three months. The legislator, thus, wanted to know when the government will start paying them monthly pensions.
The deputy minister said that the Treasury has been effecting the quarterly system because of the proposal by the retirees themselves. She said that the government would be ready anytime to resort to the previous monthly system if the beneficiaries would so needs
