KAGERA Regional Commissioner Salim Mustapha Kijuu has directed councils in Muleba, Bukoba, Biharamulo, Ngara, Karagwe, Kyerwa and Misenyi to ensure that each plants at least 1.5 million trees each year in bid to preserve the environment. According to him, the region plans to plant 12 million trees annually.
He made the remarks on Friday during the National Environmental Day held at Bukoba district council offices. “Each district should focus on planting at least 1.5 million trees each year. Also, you should enact by-laws to protect the environment from bush fires.
People who flout the directive should be prosecuted in court,” he said. He also said efforts should be taken to ensure that illegal fishing along Lake Victoria is stopped. The bad practice has negative effects on the nation’s natural resources.
Millions of inmature fish are killed each year. Gen Kijuu last week visited Muleba district where he supervised destroying various illegal fishing gear including 10,756 monofilaments, 192 beach seines (kokoro), 7,538 metres of kokoro ropes, 161 fishing boats and 1,688 kgs of fish all worth 1,261,231,280/-.
The illegal fishing gear was impounded within a period of three months.
He reminded residents in the region to ensure that illegal fishing is jointly controlled, and directed Village Chairpersons to lead the war because they were nearer to the people and know well their daily lives.
