The University of  Dar es Salaam (UDSM) in collaboration with the Beijing-based Confucius Institute is set to introduce Chinese language course at Diploma level in the next 2016/2017  academic year.

The UDSM Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), Prof Florens Luoga, revealed this in Dar es Salaam yesterday when briefing journalists on the proposed programme.

“Under the newly established Confucius Institute at UDSM, students will learn and understand Chinese language and culture in efforts to foster bilateral ties between Tanzania and China,” Prof Luoga said.
The two-year diploma course will officially begin in the next academic year so that students can be able to learn and understand Chinese language.

“Giving a diploma programme in Chinese is the long term  course and that is why we have a Confucius Institute here (UDSM) in order to give education to the students to learn the Chinese language here and be able to use the skills in their own development,” he noted.

“I challenge the Tanzanian students to utilise the opportunities to learn the Chinese language as there is lot they will gain from it with which will help move their lives forward,” he stressed.

“Confucius Institute continues the tradition of strengthening historical ties between China and Tanzania; I urge the entire public to make maximum use of the opportunity.

“This will not only be beneficial to students but to all who wish to learn the language, especially businessmen who frequently travel to China,” Prof Luoga said.

“We are very delighted that this plan has attracted so many students beyond our expectations who wish to study Chinese language.”
For her part, Head of Confucius Institute at UDSM, Prof Zhang Xiaozhen said that UDSM in Tanzania together with Zhejiang Normal University in China will together start a bachelor degree in Chinese language by 2018. “This will provide a room for Tanzanian students to study in China for two years and they will complete the remaining two years in Tanzania,” Prof Xiaozhen said.

Apart from that Confucius Institute offers scholarship to the students who can speak and write Chinese language.“We offer a semester scholarship which is for four  months, a one year scholarship, bachelor degree in Chinese language which is for three years, one year scholarship on Chinese language together with a Masters degree for three years as well as masters in Chinese language,” she underscored. The student can be granted the scholarship of their choices according to the level of the proficient test done as each scholarship has its own qualified test.

The Confucius Institute is a non-profit educational organisation with its headquarters in Beijing in China while most of its branches are housed in the universities around the world. The  Confucius Institute is    affiliated with the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, whose aim is to promote Chinese language and culture.
