THE Minister for Constitutional Affairs and Justice, Dr Harrison Mwakyembe, has directed the Registration, Insolvency and Trusteeship Agency (RITA) to stop with immediate effect, registration of new trustees of civil societies, associations, mosques and other social groups and embark on verifying the legality of the institutions.
Dr Mwakyembe has issued 90-day ultimatum
effective immediately to ensure the verification exercise is completed
and provide him with a full report that should include detailed reports
of the trustees.
Other requirements are passport size
pictures, residential addresses and any other important information
concerning the institutions. “The original copy should remain at RITA
and a copy sent to the ministry for verification and record keeping,” he
explained.
The minister issued the directives when
he met the RITA management and board members in a move aimed at
improving the institution’s efficiency. RITA has more than 5,000
trustees in its registration books.
Meanwhile, Dr Mwakyembe has called for a
meeting next week with all authorities responsible with registration of
civil society groups, companies and other institutions.
The meeting will discuss and improve the
registration process and communication systems between the government
registration bodies and other stakeholders.
