Build staff quarters for health workers - Pinda

EX-PREMIER Mr Mizengo Pinda has directed all councils in both Rukwa and Katavi regions to supplement government efforts by constructing staff quarters for health workers to attract them agree to live and work in remote areas.

The retired Premier said the councils ought to involve wananchi in building the staff quarters in order to seriously address the long outstanding problem facing health workers particularly in rural areas in both regions.
Mr Pinda made the remark during a handing over ceremony held at Kabungu dispensary in Mpanda District, Katavi region in which the Benjamin William Mkapa Foundation handed over 19 houses for health workers in Katavi and Rukwa regions valued over 1.3bn/-.
The Foundation Chief Executive Officer, Dr Ellen Senkoro, briefed the retired premier that apart from constructing houses for health personnel the foundation has also employed about 63 medical personnel who were dispatched to both regions of Katavi and Rukwa.
According to Dk Senkoro, the foundation in its efforts to address shortages of teaching staff, has employed eight teachers to health colleges in Rukwa region.
Dr Senkoro further elaborated that the foundation has closely been working with the Ministry of Health, Community Development, Gender, Elderly and Children since 2011 in effort to address challenges facing the health sector in the country including shortages of skilled medical workers and staff quarters.
According to Dr Senkoro, already the foundation has built 480 houses in 51 councils in the country for medical personnel among them, 40 houses are in Katavi and Rukwa regions.
Dr Senkoro said in Katavi region the foundation has built a house in each villages of Sibwesa and Karema along the shore of lake Tanganyika as well as in Milala and Kabungu villages in Mpanda District
