Crime rate declines in Zanzibar, Bunge told

DAILY NEWS Reporters in Dodoma
THE rate of crime in Zanzibar is reportedly on the decline as the twin islands prepare for fresh polls slated for March 20, the National Assembly was told.

Home Affairs Deputy Minister, Mr Hamad Yusuf Masauni, said last year there were 1,673 cases reported in police stations in the archipelago compared to 3,227 cases the previous year.
“It is not right to say that crime is still high in the Isles as some people are trying to suggest. Government is prepared to contain cases of crime in the country,” he said. Mr Masauni was responding to Malindi MP Mr Ally Saleh Ally (CUF) who charged that there were increased cases of criminal attacks in West Unguja and Urban districts.
He said unidentified people, who cover their faces with masks and sometimes called Mazombi, have threatened to cause serious problems in the area. However, the minister said the policemen would investigate the claims to establish their authenticity.
“The government cannot use such groups of people. Let me state here that police will seriously investigate the allegations,” Mr Masauni said. In his question, the Malindi MP had wanted the government to specifically state what people of Unguja should expect from the government as the group continues to torture residents of the area.
Mr Masauni said government has the mechanism to deal with any criminal act in the area. Reports surfaced last year that there were people who hide their faces and threatened to break business kiosks and mosques.
