TANZANIA Bureau of Standards (TBS) has launched a vigorous drive to remove from the market substandard products including fake and second-hand tyres effective this month.
TBS Director General, Mr Joseph
Masikitiko, told reporters that the campaign is aimed at ensuring that
only genuine and approved motor vehicle tyres are sold in the local
market.
He revealed this when he unveiled the
bureau’s 2016 Plan to rid the local market of substandard imported and
locally-made products. “We are capable of starting this campaign as we
have the personnel to take up the challenge. We’re set to open offices
in Mwanza, Mbeya, Arusha and the country’s border posts,” he said.
The campaign will also target
lubricants, solar panels, batteries, corrugated iron sheets, cement
products, electric cables and second-hand clothes. “We have been
receiving complaints on second-hand tyres.
We’ll remove them from the market as
well as the substandard ones. Owners should remove them before we catch
them,” he cautioned. He said by October last year, TBS had closed 42
industries for either supplying substandard goods or going beyond their
licences.
Mr Masikitiko urged the public to ensure that every purchase of a product they make has TBS standard mark.
