State working on indicative fees

AS the country looks forward to having an indicative fee structure for private schools, the government has announced that there will be no uniformity as there is a number of factors to be put into consideration.

This was revealed by the Minister of Education, Science and Technology, Prof Joyce Ndalichako here yesterday.
She insisted that it was not possible for all private schools to charge the same fee. Speaking when contributing to President John Magufuli’s parliament inaugural speech, Prof Ndalichako said that the ministry was compelled to come up with an indicative fee structure to control unjustified fee hikes in private schools.
She said that there is a number of things to put into consideration, including quality of education given by certain schools, meals, school infrastructure and learning environment among others.
The minister said that a consultant tasked to work on the issue is in the final stage of completing indicative fee proposals, which will then be presented to the government for discussion and eventual implementation.
“We are expecting to receive the proposal in the next two months after which we will call all education stakeholders and add their inputs before we go for full implementation,” Prof Ndalichako said.
She said the consultant was tasked with collecting views from different education stakeholders, including parents, private school owners, teachers and the general public.
The former National Examination Council of Tanzania (NECTA) Executive Secretary said that every private school has to justify its tuition fee before getting a permit from the ministry.
“We can’t rush in coming up with the structure without examining it in detail and this is why it is taking us too long but I hope the proposals will be on our hands soon for further action,” she insisted. The country has about 17,000 primary schools, out of which 1,000 are private -- and about 4,700 secondary schools, out of which about 1,400 are private.
