Speaking at the 45th Graduation Ceremony
graced by Acting Chancellor, Ambassador Nicholaus Kuhanga at the
university’s main campus in the city on Wednesday, the Vice-Chancellor,
Professor Rwekaza Mukandala, urged the finalists (totalling 7,009) to be
considerate and trustworthy members of the society.
He further urged them to refrain from
actions that would tarnish the good image of the academic institution.
“We (lecturers) did our best to prepare you to join the general public
as educated and responsible persons endowed with intellectual ability to
make positive contribution to humanity.
Be humble and ready to lend a hand to
all,” Prof Mukandala said. He asked the graduates not to forget to help
those in need of their support and give advice at the right moment to
prevent late disappointments.
‘’Do not wait for tragic moments to
strike only to make the society regret later. Work sensitively to
realise your ambition. Do not be afraid of setbacks. Learn from a baby
struggling to walk upright.
The frequent falls should not be reason
for despair,” the VC said. He challenged them to reciprocate
enthusiastically for the sacrifice paid by parents, guardians and the
tax payers whose contributions enabled their stay at the university to
the graduation day.
“Helping others is a long-term
investment. Make use of the skills attained to help you withstand the
challenges of the dynamic world. Be confident and make rational
decisions,” he insisted.
Prof Mukandala was pleased with the
historic achievements both academically and public leadership as
graduates from the university are leading the three organs of the state
at the same time -- the Executive, the Judiciary and the legislature. He
said since its establishment, the UDSM vision has been to produce
committed intellectuals ready to serve the nation with diligence.
“I congratulate President John Magufuli,
our (UDSM) graduate three times - in 1988 (BSc), in 1994 (MSc) and 2009
(PhD). Also allow me to express my best wishes to the Chief Justice
(CJ) Justice Mohamed Chande Othman our graduate in 1974 and great
approval to the Speaker of the National Assembly, Mr Job Ndugai, who
also graduated from this institution in 1993,’’ he told the convocation.
He went on: ‘’Again we are extremely
delighted as the Deputy Speaker, Dr Tulia Ackson Mwansasu (graduated in
2003) and the Prime Minister, Mr Majaliwa Kassim Majaliwa (graduated in
1998),” he proudly stated.
Earlier, the Chairman of University of
Dar es Salaam Council, Mr Peter Ngumbulu, said despite challenges
encountered such as insufficient funding and aged infrastructure, the
government has extended support to the university for the realisation of
intended objectives
