Magufuli names little-known politician as Prime Minister

Kassim Majaliwa has been elected as Tanzania's new Prime Minister after President John Magufuli nominated him Thursday.

In a hand written letter delivered to Parliament's Speaker Job Ndugai, the president named the politician and member of parliament for Ruangwa Constituency since 2010 the new premier to the assembled House Members. 

After the announcement - which was received with enthusiasm by many MPs - the Speaker announced that Parliament would adjourn after forty-five minutes to give the appointees time to reflect on their legislative positions. 

Mr Majaliwa was approved by Parliament thereafter with nearly three-quarter of votes in favour. He will be sworn in at State house on Friday.

The Prime Minister-elect was born December 22, 1960 and was a teacher prior to joining politics.

In 2010 he was elected MP for Lindi Ruangwa before former President Jakaya Kikwete appointed him as a Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Office for Regional Administration and Local Government specialising in Education in 2012.
