SURVEILLANCE teams have been dispatched to all seven districts of Muleba, Karagwe, Ngara, Bukoba, Biharamulo, Misenyi and Kyerwa following outbreak of cholera, the Kagera Regional Commissioner, Mr John Mongela, has said.
Cholera, a highly dangerous disease, has
hit the Municipality of Bukoba causing two deaths recorded between
Wednesday and Thursday, last week. Mr Mongela directed District
Commissioners to form a task force to sensitize people on how the
disease is contracted and necessary preventive measures be taken.
People should not be allowed to get in
contact with persons suspected to have died of cholera, he said. “The
fight against the pandemic must involve all residents. It is a matter of
life and death.
“The only known cause for the deadly
disease is filthy in all its forms. First and foremost, proper
sanitation is one of the tools against the disease. It requires the
highest degree of personal hygiene.
“This can be done. Let us all take
heed,” he said. He noted that the dreaded cholera, is once again
wreaking havoc in the country. He urged residents to take precautionary
measures, including washing hands with soap, before taking any meal and
doing the same when coming out of a latrine.
