THE Tanzania Reinsurance Company (TANRE) in collaboration with the Zambia Reinsurance organised a two-day training programme for workers in the industry.
“The programme has attracted 33 participants, three from Zambia and 30 from local firms,” TANRE Chief Underwriting Officer, Mr Amani Tuntufye, said in Dar es Salaam.
He said training focused on various practical aspects of reinsurance and insurance. “The objective is to conduct hands-on training to our clients’ staff,” he said.

Mr Tuntufye said much as the insurance industry was not new in Tanzania, there is still a lot to be desired in terms of skills among the practitioners and people’s mindset.
“The awareness of the benefits of insurance in the society is still very low, many people including those living in affluent areas such as Oysterbay, Msasani, Masaki and Mikocheni have not insured their houses and other properties.
“These are people who have money, good education and exposure, but reluctant to take insurance covers, save for motor vehicle policies which are mandatory,” Mr Tuntufye observed and urged for change.
He, however, said lack of awareness was among challenges that the Tanzanian society in general face and called for concerted effort by various stakeholders in educating the public on disasters and their mitigation.
“We must always be prepared to manage and mitigate the effects on disasters...and here is where insurance is a matter of crucial importance,” he said.
Mr Tuntufye said TANRE in collaboration with other partners from the Southern African Development Community (SADC) member countries such as Zimbabwe and Botswana have been working together in conducting training since 2011.
