ZANZIBAR President, Dr Ali Mohamed
Shein, condemned misguided individuals who use differences in religious,
tribal, political ideologies and economic status to divide Tanzanians.
Dr Shein advised members of the public
to ignore people bent on distorting the country’s unity for their own
ends. He made the remarks at the inauguration of the Uhuru Torch Race at
Maji Maji Stadium here. He stressed that such people should never be
entertained if national unity is to be sustained.
“I strongly urge Tanzanians to shy away
from people who indulge themselves in nefarious acts whose end is to
divide Tanzanians, especially now when we are heading towards the
national general elections,” he said.
Dr Shein said that the Uhuru Torch Race
should be used as a symbol that fosters peace, hope and unity as a
nation whenever it passes.
It should also remind the members of the
public of their obligations to the nation. He also advised youth to shy
away from involvement in narcotic drug business or consumption which he
said paints grim picture of the nation abroad.
He expressed the government’s commitment
to ensure that it tightens security along borders and entry points to
ensure that the boundaries are not used for drug trafficking.
“It is a shame to the nation, when you
realise that some Tanzanians, especially the youth, are being
apprehended for possession and trafficking the drugs.
This diabolical habit should stop,” he
said. He urged the race leaders to ensure that they deliver clear
messages to members of the public about the desire of both parts of the
Union (Mainland and Zanzibar) to bring about changes.
“Do not involve yourself in issues that
are against our morals and traditions. I believe that you can perform
diligently as you race the torch throughout the country. You have been
picked on merit. So, perform diligently,” he said.
Speaking during the occasion, the
Minister for Information, Culture, Youth and Sports, Dr Fenella
Mukangara, said the Uhuru Torch is among national tools which have
assisted in educating members of the public on various matters.
She said this year’s theme of the Uhuru Torch race advocates for public support against HIV/AIDS, malaria, drugs and corruption.
Ruvuma Regional Commissioner (RC), Said
Mwambungu, said the torch will start its race in the region on April 29
and will be seen off on May 4. Development projects worth 10.3bn/- will
be inaugurated.
