The Blackphone, billed as the most secure smartphone in the world, will be available locally from next month.
Kenya will be the first country in Africa to get the phone after its debut in Europe, Middle East and the US in July this year.
Blackphone is manufactured by SGP Circle, a joint venture between Silent Circle and Geeksphone.
Silent Circle provides expertise in software and data security while Geekphone is a Spanish mobile company which produces the hardware components.
SGP has identified Mobile Edge systems, a local IT company, as its Kenyan distributor.
“Mobile Edge is honoured to bring this game-changer in the mobile industry to Kenya where mobile transactions have become the norm,” said Ben Lang, the chief executive of Mobile Edge.
Insurance
The phone will retail at over Sh80,000, a price that will include insurance for the device. Blackphone is targeting individuals who demand greater privacy and companies worried about their corporate security.
The device joins BlackBerry as one of the most secure phones in the market.
Blackphone is the brainchild of former US Navy SEAL and security expert Mike Janke and his business partner Phil Zimmermann, a data encryption specialist.
“In this digital age where smartphones have become a way of life and tools of trade, with apps trying to access your private info and everyone else striving to know what you think, people have traded their privacy for convenience,” Mr Lang said.
