Police in Columbus, Ohio, in the United
States are investigating an incident where a 62-year-old Kenyan man was
shot by an unknown gunman.
Meshack K. Mwangi was found with a gunshot wound on Greenwich Street at 11.51 pm on Monday night.
Police
and paramedics rushed to the scene and took Mr Mwangi to Ohio State
University’s Wexner Medical Centre, where he was pronounced dead early
Tuesday morning.
Neighbours said a man who lived in the same area as Mr Mwangi tried to resuscitate him.
“Soon
after we heard the gunshot, we rushed out to find Mwangi’s neighbour
performing CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation). Unfortunately, he didn’t
make it,” said Jessica Green, who was among the first people to arrive
at the scene.
HOMICIDE
On Tuesday evening, detectives from the Columbus police homicide department told the Nation by phone that they had no known suspect or motive in the shooting.
“All
I can tell you is that we are pursuing several leads,” said an officer
who did not wish to be identified as he was not authorised to speak to
the media.
Mr Sam Kinyanjui, a son of the deceased, reportedly told a local newspaper, the Columbus Dispatch, that his mother was not ready to discuss Mr Mwangi’s death.
Court records seen by the Nation indicate that Mr Mwangi and Ruth Kinyanjui divorced in October last year after 33 years of marriage.
They were married in 1981 in Nairobi, Kenya.
The
Columbus police department said Mr Mwangi's death was the city’s 64th
homicide this year and appealed to anyone with any information on what
could have led to the fatal shooting to call the homicide unit.
