- Betting in sports has been the craze this season and for many avid football fans, the World Cup is one gamble they cannot afford to miss.
Football fanatic Isabel Sherrie Naire got the most
pleasant surprise of her life so far after she bagged a Sh1 million cash
prize on a multibet with SportPesa, an online betting site last month.
This was after she bet Sh100 on eight of her favourite football teams in
the French League.

Just like Ms Naire, many people from all walks of life are
putting their money on the ongoing football matches in Brazil as well as
other football premier leagues hoping to hit the jackpot.
Betting in sports has been the craze this season
and for many avid football fans, the World Cup is one gamble they cannot
afford to miss. In the past few weeks, SportPesa has caused a frenzy
among football fans who religiously bet on the matches to be played each
day.
Stories of how one won and another lost have
dominated conversations on radio and between friends, who still go back
and bet more even after losing. The stakes are even higher as the World
Cup matches move to the quarter finals stage, which means higher bets are
expected to be made.
The SportPesa website, which is run by Pevan East
Africa, requires individuals to register as a member with their phone
numbers as the user name. Participants can then start placing bets on
the team they think will win in a particular match, or predict a draw
before the game starts.
“You can bet at any time before the first whistle
of the referee and win instantly, after the last whistle,” says David
Kanyeki, a Director at SportPesa.
For every match, SportsPesa gives the betting odds
of the teams by indicating chances of a team winning against another or
the chances of the match ending in a draw.
Choice
The bets, which start from Sh100, are then
multiplied by the odds of the team winning, which later earns you a cash
bonus if your prediction was right. There most one can bet on a single
match is Sh20,000.
The portal also gives gamblers the choice to make a
single or multiple bets. At the end of the game, the results are given
and those who win can either claim their winnings or use them to bet
again.
“Most participants find multiple bets more
lucrative than single bets. However, the chance of winning multiple bets
is lower than the chance of winning a single bet,” says Peter Munene,
who has placed several bets on SportPesa. Peter explains that this is
because all your multiple bet predictions must be in the right order for
you to win.
Most participants are eyeing the jackpot, which is a
bet on all 13 games with a stake of Sh100, that puts you in the running
to win Sh5 million.
Chezafutaa, another online gaming portal sponsored
by Summit lager, is a prediction site where football fans register and
give their predictions on the matches and earn points.
With every correct prediction, one earns three points and stands a chance of winning various daily prizes.

Members are then ranked in the website’s
leaderboard according to the most points earned. The top 10 will then be
placed in a draw where they will automatically win prizes.
Stephen Muchogu, the website administrator of Chezafutaa, says that membership is growing with a current registration of 9,000 members.

promotions in pubs around the country and on social media where we
engage football fans and create awareness,” he says.
