Lawyers' high fees barrier to getting justice - WLAC

WLAC Managing Director, Theodosia Muhulo
Women's Legal Aid Centre (WLAC) has said that high fees charged by lawyers for legal services is one of the barriers to people seeking justice.

This was revealed in Dar es Salaam by WLAC Managing Director, Theodosia Muhulo at the launch of free legal services to the public.

She said that that WLAC receives about 60 gender based violence cases a week, mainly from women and children, adding that society still needs to be educated on where to obtain legal assistance.

“This is why we have decided to launch this free service to allow them to report to us any kind of violence so that we can help them find justice, no matter how long it might take us,” she explained.
She called on the public to report their cases to relevant authorities in order to receive help.

Launching the service, Retired Court of Appeal Judge Eusebia Munuo said many of the challenges facing the society when seeking for legal services are the high costs charged by lawyers.

“This is one of the major hindrances facing the society when it comes to obtaining justice… but assistance from various institutions is the key to helping them,” she said.

She hailed WLAC for their excellent idea of providing free legal aid to the deserving members of the community.
