Sixteen people have been arrested in connection with recent bomb explosions in Arusha which killed five people and injured several others.

Briefing reporters in Arusha yesterday, Director of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Isaya Mngulu said the suspects are linked to the Al-Shabaab terrorist group.

He said the suspects were arrested in different locations countrywide. He said the exercise is sustainable and was made possible with collaboration from Good Samaritans.
“The operation is still on as there are many suspects linked to different bombings that happened in Arusha for the past one year,” said the DCI.

DCI Mngulu named the suspects as Abdallah Athumani Labia (34), a Mang’ola-based farmer in Karatu, Abdulkarim Thabit Hasia (32) a resident of Ngusero, Hassan Zuberi Saidi (28), a resident of Tengeru and Rajab Phiri Hemedi (28), a resident of Magugu area in Babati District of Manyara region.

The suspects were immediately taken before the Arusha Resident Magistrate’s Court where sixteen counts were read against them, including attempted murder as well as enticing the youth to join the militant group.
At around 11am, the suspects started entering the court rooms presided over by senior resident Magistrate, Mustapher Siyani.

Reading the charge-sheet for nine suspects, state attorney Khalili Muda said on the fateful day the accused allegedly caused the death of Sudi Ramadhani.
Ramadhani died when receiving treatment at Arusha Mount Meru Regional Hospital on May 13, this year.

The state attorney also claimed that the suspects attempted to kill 14 people by detonating an explosive contrary to the laws governing the country.

On April 13, this year several people were injured when a makeshift bomb exploded at the Arusha Night Park pub, located at Mianzini area of Arusha city, where football fans were watching television.

Other incidents include a bomb attack at a Roman Catholic church in Olasiti in the city, killing two people and another that killed three people and left several others injured in a CHADEMA’s election rally in June last year.
The case was postponed until June 12, this year, when it will come up for another mention.

In another development, the resident magistrate court moved its activities for a while to the Mount Meru Regional Hospital, to read charges to two of the suspects hospitalized there. The suspects were named as Abdallah Maginga Wambura and Abdulkarim Thabit Hasia who had been unable to attend the court proceedings because of illness.

The state attorney Marcelino Mwamunyange read the charge sheet before magistrate Siyani, saying the suspects have allegedly been enticing people to join the militant group of Al-Shabab.

However, the attorney said between 2010 to February 2014, in different parts of the country suspects Swalehe
Hamisi (51) of Sombetini, Abdallah Yassin (33), of Tunduru and Sudi Nasibu Lusuma (18) of Mwanza allegedly enticed and registered people to join Al Shabab.
