Police reforms chief, two others sacked

 

A police officer was accused of receiving money into his bank account from his junior officers and other Kenyans including 800metre athletics world champion David Rudisha.

Three officers have been removed from service after they failed the vetting process, the Police Commission has said.

A report released on Friday showed that those dismissed are Jonathan Koskei, Peter Eregae and Francis Okonya.

"In arriving at the decision, the panel considered each officer's entry qualification, integrity, financial probity, and respect for human dignity/rights," Johnson Kavuludi, the National Police Service Commission chairman said.

The four officers who got a reprieve are John Ochieng Owino, William Sayia, Peter Kavila, and Omar Shurie Abdi.

"They were found to be competent and suitable to continue serving as police officers," the chairman said.

SH900,000 FROM RUDISHA

During the vetting process last month, Mr Koskei, the Director of Police Reforms, was at pains to explain why he received Sh900,000 from athlete Rudisha David, who is also a police officer.

The police vetting panel was also told that Mr Eregae, the Senior Deputy Commissioner of Police II, was forced to operate from a parking lot after former police commissioner Major-General Hussein Ali locked him out of office for five months. (READ: I worked from car park, says top officer)

A session to vet Mr Okonya, officer in charge of the Banking Fraud Investigations, was held in camera due to what the panel termed as matters touching on national security.
