A five-year-old boy ran over a woman and her two-year-old son when he accidentally started his mother's car parked in front of a creche in the German city of Fulda, police have said.

The boy had been sitting in the car while his mother was speaking to a friend outside the creche on Thursday afternoon.

Police believe he turned the ignition key, causing the car to jump forward and push the 32-year-old woman and her toddler into a nearby hedge, trapping them under the vehicle.

Both were rushed to hospital but police said the injuries were not life-threatening
