President Kenyatta returns from EAC Summit

President Uhuru Kenyatta on Sunday afternoon arrived in the country from Kampala, Uganda where he attended 15th Ordinary Summit of the East African Community (EAC) Heads of State.

The summit attended by Presidents Jakaya Kikwete of Tanzania, Paul Kagame of Rwanda, Pierre Nkurunziza of Burundi and the host President Yoweri Museveni endorsed a Monetary Union Protocol that is expected to be ratified by July 2014 and implemented over a 10 year period. During the Kampala summit, President Kenyatta was installed as the new EAC chairman for the next one year. He takes over from President Museveni.

President Museveni also praised the Kenyan government's commitment to enhanced regional trade and urged EAC member countries to hasten the process of integration. (READ: President Yoweri Museveni praises President Uhuru Kenyatta's commitment to EAC)

President Kenyatta also met with President Kikwete on the sidelines of the summit in the wake of cooling relations between the countries over what Tanzania termed as the "Coalition of the Willing" of Kenya, Rwanda and Uganda.
