The United Republican Party (URP) now appears to backtrack on its mission to discipline Bomet Governor Isaac Ruto over his referendum calls.

The governor has in the recent past been strongly pushing for a referendum to amend the Constitution.
A statement issued by the party chairman Francis ole Kaparo during a URP meeting in Naivasha Friday said that the party will not discuss the conduct of the Bomet governor.

“We must be tolerant of the divergent views that will enrich our party and our country.
URP will strive to be a party that will correct itself internally without unnecessarily inflicting pain on its members,” said Mr Kaparo.

He said he was surprised to read in the press that among the agenda in the party's two day meeting was to discuss Mr Isaac Ruto.

“The Bomet governor is not listed as one of our points of agenda and it is therefore wrong for a section of the media to claim that we have come her to tame him,” added Mr Kaparo.

He said the two days meeting will discuss among other issues party organisation and management, political parties and new constitution, party coalition politics and coalition management.

The meeting will also discuss the internal democracy and party dispute resolution strategies besides developing an action plan for the party.

“We hope that after the two days' meeting we shall be better equipped to handle our party and strengthen it as we strategize on our next move,” said Mr Kaparo.

On the referendum issue, he reaffirmed that the party was totally against the clamour for a referendum saying “this is completely unacceptable and URP is not happy with the way the agenda is being pushed”.

“This push for a referendum is illegitimate and has been taken away from the owners. It has now got surrogate owners,” said Mr Kaparo
