Dar es Salaam. Two prison officers have been expelled from their jobs after they were caught with government treasures on July 23, this year. They were among seven people who were caught in Kiteto District, Manyara Region.

The expelled officers were named as Superintendent of Prisons (SP) Ally Ramadhani Sauko, who was the head of Kiteto Prison and his deputy, Assistant Superintendent (ASP) of Prison, Joseph Kimaro, who apart from being caught with government treasures, was accused of abusing office by allowing government properties, which include the prison car and weapons, to be used in poaching activities.

According to the ministry of Home Affairs spokesperson, Mr Isaac Nantanga, said that the duo prison officers were expelled on July 29 after a thorough investigation carried by the ministry.

“The ministry’s permanent secretary by powers vetted to him under Prison Services Regulation of 1997, Section 34(6)(i), fired them following a thorough investigation carried by ministry officials,” detailed Mr Nantanga.

Details show that ant-poaching squad at Kiteto nabbed the prison officers with giraffe, zebra and ostrich meat.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson noted that the government was finalising a joint programme with various donors on afforestation of areas earlier occupied by refugees.

“We are aware that most of the areas affected by deforestation basing on the fact that more trees were used as firewood and poles for constructing refugees’ houses,” said Mr Nantanga.
