Zanzibar. The National Bank of Commerce (NBC) yesterday hosted its second Iftar for its Islamic banking customers in Zanzibar.

The aim was to bring itself closer to clients in the Isles during the Holy month of Ramadhan.
Zanzibar President Ali Mohammed Shein was among the dignitaries who took part in the Iftar at Zanzibar Beach Resort, a few kilometres from the Stone town.

Speaking during the Iftar, NBC managing director Mizinga Melu said: “The National Bank of Commerce understands the significance of the Holy Month of Ramadhan as a key pillar in Islam and as such we believe there is no better time to sit with all our customers and express our sincere gratitude for their continuous support than through this Iftar.”

She added: “We always look for opportunities to work together with our Islamic banking customers in order to identify gaps where we need to improve our services to meet your expectations.

Commenting on NBC’s Hajj promotion, she said: “We strongly believe that the relevance of our organisation can be determined by how far we are willing to go in order to help people achieve their ambitions- in the right way. It is because of this strong belief which resulted in NBC, through our Islamic banking section, to launch an annual Hajj campaign last year, which aims at helping Islamic banking customers to fulfill that important pillar in Islam which is to perform Hajj. This campaign is ongoing for the second year running.”

NBC started offering Islamic banking services in May 2010. Currently, the services offered are Islamic savings, Islamic current, Islamic business and Islamic corporate accounts. These products are interest-free, in compliance with Islamic laws, and are open to any customers who are interested regardless of their faiths.

The bank is focused on expanding the products offered under this proposition in the near future, to reach out to and benefit many more customers who seek to use these products.

The Iftar was presented by a strong delegation from NBC head office. Apart from the managing director herself, others were NBC board chairman Mussa Assad, board member Hussein Kassim, retail banking head Mmoloki Legodu, and acting Finance boss Yassir Masoud. Bank customers, government representatives, religious leaders and the bank’s Zanzibar branch staff attended.
